The proprietor of an inexpensive housing complicated in Northeast, D.C. has agreed to pay a $1 million settlement to enhance dwelling situations for tenants.

Residents at an inexpensive housing complicated in Northeast, D.C., who had complained about safety points and code violations for years, may even see reduction quickly because the house constructing’s proprietor has agreed to pay a $1 million settlement with the District to fund enhancements.

The proprietor and supervisor of Mayfair Mansions, a 410-unit inexpensive housing complicated on Hayes Street NE, pays over $1 million to enhance the well being and security of its residents, according to a news release from D.C.’s Office of the Attorney General.

“Every District of Columbia resident deserves protected and liveable housing at the beginning,” stated Argie Weatherington, part chief of the workplace’s housing and environmental justice part.

After receiving resident complaints, the legal professional common’s workplace initiated an investigation into the constructing’s points, which resulted in the settlement.

One of the situations that residents complained about was the presence of rodents, Weatherington informed WTOP.

“As part of that, they’re hiring impartial pest contractors,” Weatherington stated. “They are going to maintain the dumpster areas clear and safe to chop off meals sources to these rodents.”

Under the settlement, the constructing proprietor will repair all violations and improve safety on the property.

She stated half of the cash can be used to refund hire to tenants impacted by the poor housing situations.

“[The OAG] exists for residents of the District of Columbia,” Weatherington stated. “To the extent that persons are experiencing housing situations or poor situations the place they reside, please be at liberty to contact our workplace. This is what we’re right here for.”
