SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken underscored the necessity to ensure that applied sciences maintain democratic values, telling a democracy summit on Monday that authoritarian regimes deploy them to undermine democracy and human rights.

Blinken spoke on the ministerial convention of the third Summit for Democracy, a U.S.-led initiative held in Seoul, South Korea, this yr.

“Revitalizing democracy may even require us to form the technological future, that’s inclusive, that’s rights respecting, directed at driving progress in folks’s lives,” Blinken stated.

“As authoritarian and repressive regimes deploy applied sciences to undermine democracy and human rights, we have to make sure that expertise sustains and helps democratic values and norms,” he stated.

U.S. President Joe Biden first proposed the thought of a democracy summit throughout his 2020 marketing campaign and has referred to as for the U.S. and like-minded allies to point out the world that democracies serve societies higher than autocracies.

The Biden administration introduced because the summit kicked off that six extra international locations have been becoming a member of an American-led consortium centered on countering the misuse of business spyware and adware. Blinken introduced that Finland, Germany, Ireland, Japan, Poland and South Korea have been becoming a member of the group that already included Australia, Canada, Costa Rica, Denmark, France, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and the U.S.

Concerns about international locations utilizing spyware and adware to focus on activists, diplomats and journalists is a rising fear for the White House. Earlier this month, the U.S. Treasury Department introduced that it had sanctioned two people and a Greece-based commercial spyware company headed by a former Israeli army officer that developed, operated and distributed expertise used to focus on U.S. authorities officers, journalists and coverage consultants.

Biden administration officers stated it marked the primary time that the Treasury Department has sanctioned folks or entities for the misuse of spyware and adware.

Also Monday, Blinken met South Korean Foreign Minister Cho Tae-yul and President Yoon Suk Yeol for talks on North Korea and the U.S.-South Korea alliance, in response to the South Korean authorities.
